An essential oil is a concentrated, hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. They are also known as volatile or ethereal oils, or simply as the "oil of" the plant material from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. Made from the finest ingredients they can be used in aromatherapy, aromatherapy is a form of complementary medicine, in which healing effects are ascribed to the aromatic compounds in essential oils and other plant extracts ,that have been applied in folk medicine since ancient times and are still widely used today.
Essential oils generally should not be applied directly to the skin in their undiluted or neat form. Some can cause irritation, or provoke an allergic reaction. Instead, essential oils should be blended with a carrier / base oil before being applied.
Ingestion of essential oils for therapeutic purposes, should never be done except under the supervision of someone licensed to prescribe such treatment.
